4 out of 5 stars Shipped with Windows 7 Starter, not XP as specified   July 19, 2010
    Leonardo (New England)
This machine is great, and just what I wanted. The big kicker, however, is that instead of the Windows XP Home Edition listed in the specifications, it shipped with the totally unacceptable Windows 7 Starter Edition. The Windows 7 Starter Edition appears to have one and only purpose; to coerce users into buying an upgrade. This is unacceptable.

    3 out of 5 stars 1001p Blue   July 14, 2010

Works great out of the box, and i was surprised at how well it did with 1Gb ram. I had also ordered a Crucial 2GB stick as recommended by Crucial, and that's when the problems began. The door has one screw that has a back on it, to keep it from coming completely out. You have to unscrew it until you hear it popping, and seem to be stripping, and then just go on and Pry the door off. (Would have been nice to know.) After installing the 2GB stick, i noticed several problems, the first thing that happened was the screen froze- corrupted- went crazy- what ever you want to call it, when i plugged the power cord in while using the computer. Only way to make it stop was to power down, then back up. You can unplug the cord while using it, but not plug it in. Screen messed up every time. An updated graphics driver from the Asus site took care of this, yay! However, there were other probs with shutdown and sleep. Whenever the computer needed to restart after an update - and there were many, It would not restart. The screen goes black, but drive never powers back up. Again, only way to get it back was to power down and up. Then would usually get some version of "Windows was not properly shut Down" or "Which Operating system do you want to load? " or "your last browsing session was interrupted" etc and so forth. Also, would see the message that "Boot Booster does not work" as the Bios flashed by, even tho i had gone into the Bios, disabled it, the enabled it while i saved the 2GB ram as instructed. I repeated this process many times. Boot Booster never works. Asus recommendation is to flash the Bios. And i could- maybe- do that. It might work. But then again, i read an awful lot of forum cries for help when that does not work and it wont reboot at all! I could also just stick the 1GB back in there that worked fine, and return the 2GB crucial. I think that is what i am going to do. I have already spent Way Too much time on this, and it's still buggy. I only wanted to see the inside of this computer once, and the bios never. I've gotten way too familiar with both.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent 10" Netbook   July 4, 2010

I'm very happy with my recent purchase of the ASUS 10" netbook. I like that its very portable and has great features - webcam, built in mic, skype, etc. I've been able to download several games and other tools without effecting performance. I did have the geek sqaud optimize and add Microsoft virus protection which was an additional $60 but I saved money buying the netbook through Amazon. I had not heard of ASUS before buying my netbook but have since read up on the brand and have read many good reviews of their products. I will look at ASUS again if/when I decide to purchase a full size laptop.

3 out of 5 stars Windows 7 Starter Version ruins this machine   July 1, 2010

After originally really liking this Netbook, imagine my surprise that it cannot be connected to our local network running 2 XP computers and a Vista machine. You must have full blown Windows 7 to connect.

This makes this netbook very much crippled for most users. You can't even change the wallpaper without a hack.

This one is going back so I can get one that is running XP. It's too bad too, because this one looks nice, the keyboard is great, the battery life is great, and the setup was very easy.

Shame on Microsoft for using a crippled OS.

5 out of 5 stars This is a good netbook that completes my needs - light weight and websurfing   June 30, 2010

I go to an online college and was using a laptop for this. I was getting tired of how heavy it is, bulky and HOT, oh, so dang hot! I asked a few people what their thoughts were on getting a netbook and got several different opinions (don't get this brand, get an iPad [for my school?? what??], don't get a netbook at all). I got two opinions which was to get this netbook. I only need it for school and for email. I want to be able to take it with me to where ever I want to go without carrying 50 pound laptop [exaggerating]. Of course some people still think online college isn't a real college... ugh.

The keyboard is nice. I found that the small reduction in percentage is not that big of a deal. My husband hates it, saying it's way too small for him... yet, he still uses it. Hmmm.

Start up was good. However, I did have issues with it networking to my router. I reduced security on the router a tad after so many troubleshooting efforts failed. That worked! I'm not a networking expert, though I do have some knowledge. It took me two days to figure that out.

Battery life hasn't been an issue. It goes all day from morning until I go to sleep. I plug it in right before bed and it gets about 8 hours of uninteruppted charge, which is good for the battery.

I find that it is a little slower than my laptop. I posted one of the gagets of RAM usage on my desktop to see about what it uses in physical memory, seems it stays around 47%. I try not to open too many applications for it to go any slower. I will look at upgrading the RAM here in a few months. I'm not really complaining since I knew what it came with, so I am just adding to discussion.

I found it pretty cheap at Walmart. I also did quite a bit of research on other comparable units made by different manufacturers. HP/Dell/Sony... the list goes on. They were way overpriced! This was very reasonable for what it does, plus I get a deduction on my taxes for being a student purchasing an item that is used for my studies. It is a win-win.

One little gripe is the Microsoft key is not working out for me. I am going to do a fix on this and see how that turns out. Lucky for me, my sister is an AF communications airman... so she can help out with me on this.

All-in-all, I am happy with this purchase and would love to give it 4.5 stars.
